Director’s Commentary About the Film
Luminous is a story that is both timely and engaging. Our attempt with a story that includes so many characters is to try to push it with the possibility of being either a feature film or an episodic. There are so many avenues to take from these 30-minutes. This is a story worth telling.
One thing I tried to accomplish with this film is to include a variety of individuals attempting to live in unison. Reflecting on today’s world, we often find it difficult to handle those with opposing views. Luminous forces a group of individuals, who are all going through their own personal struggles, to suddenly also take on others’ struggles. This story is a contemplation of humanity and how various individuals would react in certain situations.
As stated in the end of the film, “I do believe everything happens for a reason. In some form or another, there’s got to be a god out there. Perhaps our biggest downfall is misunderstanding him or her or whatever the hell God is.”
I believe that storytelling is not only a medium to express oneself but it also serves as a contribution to humanity. However small or large one story is, any story's goal is to make its audience feel. To me, that is the most human thing to possibly do.
Filmmaking takes a lot of commitment and work. It is just like climbing a mountain— you can't do it all at once, yet step by step. The summit is beautiful but only halfway there. You got to stay focused each step of the way and put all of yourself into it.
Luminous represents all of these ideas within itself. I am proud of what my team and I have accomplished with this project.
